Common Roofing Problems During Summer

Common Roofing Problems During Summer

Common Roofing Problems During Summer

The icy conditions have finally subsided, and summer is here. However, with the pleasant weather comes the possibility of some serious roofing problems. You should be on the lookout for possible structural problems at your property, including potential floods and post-winter damage. The following are some common roofing problems during summer to watch out for.

1. Trapped Moisture Damage

Summer brings a lot of fresh plant growth, but older leaves or stems from last fall may still be stuck on rooftops.

The combination can result in a lot of matted material in gutters and on low-sloped rooftops, trapping rainwater for a long time. At the same time, shingles that have already been battered by winter weather (including destructive winds and ice) are now facing a barrage of summer rainstorms.

It is no wonder that roofing problems during summer are frequently caused by moisture damage. That is why it is critical to address any roofing issues as soon as possible.

2. Clogged Gutters

Gutters direct water away from your home off the roof, as too much water dropping near to it will corrode the soil surrounding it and jeopardize the foundation. Blooming flowers and green trees are a beautiful sight, but they can block your gutter.

Leaves and flower petals can clog and cause issues with your roof drainage system. Blocked gutters not only ruin your walls and ceilings, but they can destroy your siding, leading to expensive repairs.

3. Damaged Shingles

This is a year-round roofing issue to keep tabs on. When hit by flying hail, particles, or fallen icicles, shingles can be cracked or broken off.

During summer, you should change your shingles as soon as practicable. Rain may force water into unprotected roofs and insulation, causing water damage and leaks in your house.

In addition, lost shingles might cause your home’s interior air to escape, resulting in increased energy costs once summer arrives.

4. Leakage

This is the most prevalent roofing problem in the summer, and it may cause the most havoc. Due to the cold weather, water leaks may go undetected during the winter. However, once summer arrives and you get a chance to check your attic, you may notice the issue.

The finding, however, will do little to prevent additional damage to an already fragile roofing system unless you hire an expert to fix the issue for you. If you see watermarks on your walls or ceilings, you have a leakage problem.

5. Pest Problems

As summer progresses, insects and animals are busily recuperating from hibernation, searching for food, and building nests. As you might expect, your attic and roof are attractive destinations. This is the reason so many pest issues begin during summer.

Birds, ants, termites, raccoons, squirrels, and other animals that might cause damage to your eaves, chimney, and rood should be averted. These pests will exploit whatever hole they can find or, in the case of birds, any place they can reach to build their nests. Protect susceptible sections of your roof against summer roof problems with guards.

6. Membrane Separation Issues

Moisture and cold temperatures can wreak havoc on your roofing membrane, forcing it to weaken and shred. Your roofing system’s components are held together by the membrane. This makes it a critical component of your roofing system that needs protection.

In the winter, aging membranes may fail and create hazardous fractures that summer rainstorms exploit. To put it another way, you have found leaks within your house. These leaks must be repaired as soon as possible since they give water, insects, and (if allowed to develop) mice access to structural elements and insulation.

Final Word

A competent roofing contractor or property manager can be a useful ally in addressing some of these common roofing problems during summer if you detect them when planning summer maintenance on your house or commercial property. If you are searching for a competent property manager to avoid these common roofing problems, you can get in touch with us for some effective solutions for your concerns.
